Running Google Apps on Huawei Devices via a Virtual Sandbox
This guide is mainly for Huawei devices running Android (e.g. HarmonyOS 4.2). HarmonyOS NEXT can also use some virtual-sandbox solutions, but that’s not covered in detail here.
There are generally two ways to get Google services on a Huawei device:
- Virtual sandbox: run Google apps inside a virtual environment
- microG: replace part of Google’s services with microG, paired with Aurora Store for downloading apps
This guide covers the first approach.
Choosing a virtual sandbox
Section titled “Choosing a virtual sandbox”The two common virtual-sandbox options for Google services on Huawei devices are GBox and Google Space (GSpace) — both are fairly popular. GSpace shows a lot of ads, so it’s not recommended.
Installation
Section titled “Installation”Using GBox as an example: if you switch your Huawei AppGallery region to an overseas region (e.g. Hong Kong), you can download GBox directly.
If you can’t switch your Huawei account’s region, download the installer from GBox’s official site instead: GBox official site
The same applies to GSpace — if you can’t switch regions, download it from the GSpace official site.
Once installed, opening GBox shows the Play Store already pre-installed. Open the Play Store and sign in with your Google account.
After signing in, you can install whatever apps you need. Installed apps are added to GBox’s home screen automatically (they aren’t installed onto your device’s system) — you can create a desktop shortcut for quick access into GBox.
Summary
Section titled “Summary”The advantage of a virtual sandbox is that it’s simple and beginner-friendly. The downside is that running Google services inside a virtual environment adds more performance overhead, background execution may be restricted by the system, notifications can be delayed, and it can’t fully replace system-level Google services.
You may have also noticed “microG service” mentioned during Google sign-in — that’s because GBox uses microG internally too, just running inside a virtual environment, which costs more performance and is somewhat less stable than installing it directly on the system.
So if you plan to use Google services long-term rather than just occasionally, I’d recommend installing microG directly on your system instead.
